A giant screen will beam the magic of the Paris Olympics directly to Townsville with a dedicated live site and fan zone at Riverway Stadium.

The Thuringowa stadium will be North Queensland’s answer to Federation Square as fans gather to share in Australia’s quest for Olympic glory.

The live site will be operational for two weekends, from August 2-4 and August 30-September 1, to capture action from both the Olympic Games and Paralympics.

Special events backing local athletes and inspiring future Olympians and Paralympians, – possible stars of the Brisbane 2032 Games in eight year’s time – will run parallel to the on-screen action.

Townsville locals will have a chance to cheer on three of the city’s four representatives live at Riverway Stadium.

Australia’s women’s water polo team, featuring local Elle Armit, will play pool matches against Canada (10pm Saturday Aug 3) and Hungary (11pm Sunday Aug 4) during the Townsville live event.

Steph Kershaw’s Hockeyroos will take on Spain in a pool match in a prime time affair at 8.45pm on Saturday August 3.

Women’s windsurfer Breiana Whitehead could also feature live, should she progress into the finals of the Women’s Windsurfing on Friday August 2 (event time TBC).

Queensland Minister for State Development and Infrastructure Grace Grace said the live sites, which also appear in Brisbane, Gold Coast, Sunshine Coast, Rockhampton, Longreach, Mackay and Cairns, would ignite the Olympic spirit across the state.

“All through Paris 2024, Queenslanders will be sharing the special excitement that goes with being a future Games host,” Ms Grace said. “Olympics and Paralympics live sites will be the perfect place for our Queensland communities to get together and show their support for our inspirational athletes.”

Three-time Olympian turned Townsville City Councillor Suzy Batkovic said she was thrilled that Townsville would host a live site.

“There’s certainly set to be some exhilarating performances coming out of the Paris 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games, so it’s terrific we’re able partner with the Queensland Government to bring a LIVE site to Townsville and with it the excitement of the Games,” Ms Batkovic said.

“I’m a firm believer that if you can see it, you can be it — and I think that by showcasing world-class athletes on the big screen at Riverway, we can inspire some homegrown talent from right here in Townsville who could be competing at the Brisbane 2032 Games in just eight years.”
