LOSING their long blonde locks is a small price to pay for two Townsville friends who are taking the plunge to save lives.

Dani Patch and Claire Bradbury have come together for a good cause to participate in the 2021 World’s Greatest Shave.

The event, run by the Leukaemia Foundation, is in its 23rd year and helps Australians living with blood cancer.

The duo has raised $9500 in support of shaving off their tresses at the Cotters Market at 9am on Sunday.

Claire’s involvement this year stems from her personal experience dealing with the direct effects of cancer.

“In 2017 I lost my aunty to breast cancer and in 2018 my sister was diagnosed with lymphoma, and for a time there I thought I was going to lose her, too,” she said.

“I watched my sister bravely go through chemo and radiation while raising two boys and finishing her teaching degree.

“When she started losing her hair, that is when I realised this was something I wanted to do.”

Dani’s involvement is in honour of her granddad, who lost his battle with cancer in 2018. She said shaving her head was something she had thought about for two years.

“I was always too scared or I was too worried about losing my hair and it wasn’t until Claire and I were talking and she said she was thinking about it that I thought it was now or never,” she said.

“Shaving my head is in honour of my granddad and everyone who has gone through the same battle, and I think he would be so proud.”

Claire has personally raised $1476 of a $1500 goal and said she was counting down the hours until the big event.

“I am nervous and excited ... but to me it doesn’t seem like a big deal, it is just nice to know I am making a difference, even if it is something small.”

Everyone is invited to attend Dani and Claire’s shave, which will feature a raffle with $1000 worth of prizes, dancers and temporary colourful hair spray for a gold coin donation.

More than 2 million Aussies have taken part in the event over the past two decades with an estimated 37,500kg of hair shaved.

So far this year, the national fundraisers have raised more than $10m.
