A prison officer has been seriously injured after allegedly being attacked by an inmate inside Townsville Correctional Centre.
Queensland Corrective Services revealed a male correctional officer was taken to hospital after an incident involving a prisoner in a secure unit at Townsville Correctional Complex on Monday afternoon.
It is understood the prisoner allegedly struck the officer multiple times in the face after being directed to return to his unit.
Paramedics transported the injured officer to hospital where he was assessed and released later that evening.
A Queensland Corrective Services spokesman said the officer continues to be supported by management.
“The prisoner was relocated to the detention unit and a review of his classification and placement is underway,” they said.
“The risk profile of each prisoner is regularly reviewed to ensure they are managed appropriately to maximise officer safety and the security of the centre.
“The Corrective Services Investigation Unit has been advised, and the prisoner could face further criminal charges.”
