Nestled in the Woodlands Shopping Centre, the newly opened Sticks & Grinds Cafe is quickly becoming a beloved spot for locals, thanks to its unique blend of family-operated charm and a strong sense of community.

Former radio host turned venue manager Jamie Wall embarked on this new venture in February, transforming his passion for hospitality into a family-run cafe.

Despite facing a work injury during the initial phase, Jamie’s family stepped up to make the dream a reality.

“I’ve done it for so many people in the past, and it’s so refreshing and rewarding to do it ourselves,” Jamie shared. “Bless my family for literally stepping up and taking the reins and putting together what they could with what they knew.”

Jamie’s partner Jackie, eldest son Ethan, and second eldest daughter Mikayla were instrumental in launching the cafe, while the younger children often contribute by sweeping floors, wiping tables, and handling dishes.

“They’ve always aspired to the older kids that worked with us,” Jamie said. “I can’t believe how well they work together. They impress me every day.”

This blended family’s teamwork and dedication have set Sticks & Grinds Cafe apart, creating a warm and welcoming atmosphere that customers find refreshing.

“We get told that all the time; people find it so refreshing that a loving family has come into this building and is hosting the community the way we do,” Jamie said.

A standout feature of the cafe is its pay-it-forward board, a gesture that has brought smiles to many faces and even moved some customers to tears.

Jamie recounted an emotional encounter with a profoundly deaf gentleman who was a bit stressed out after he forgot his wallet at home.

“I told him about the pay-it-forward board, and he was so thankful that tears came to his eyes,” Jamie said. “The board just keeps getting bigger and bigger every week. It really does blow my mind.”

In addition to fostering community spirit, Sticks & Grinds Cafe is dedicated to supporting local causes.

Last week, the cafe donated $1 from every large coffee sale to help raise funds for Townsville toddler Archie Downs, who needs medical treatment in the US for an aggressive tumour.

“We were going to send Archie’s GoFundMe a donation, but it just didn’t feel like it was enough,” Jamie said. “That’s when we came up with the idea of donating $1 from each large coffee, and the reaction from the community has been overwhelming. People really look out for each other in tough times.”

Currently in its soft opening phase, the cafe is planning a grand opening for late July or early August. Upcoming enhancements include a mural artist to add a touch of artistry and an upgraded kitchen that will allow for a revamped menu featuring expanded breakfast and lunch options, including vegan dishes.

Sticks & Grinds Cafe is located at the Woodlands Shopping Centre in Deeragun.
