When it comes to all things style and fashion, Annaleisa Gedoun and Danielle Rissman have it covered.

As the excitement builds for next Saturday’s Explore Property Munro & Co Ladies Day, all eyes are on the JBD Fashions on the Field fashion judges.

Annaleisa and Danielle have a long history with all things racing and race day fashion.

Both women have been attending racing carnivals for decades taking part in fashions, whether it be as a contestant or a fashion judge.

And the ladies are only too happy to share some style advice with NQ Weekend readers.

Danielle, who has garnered respect for her keen fashion sense and extensive experience, is particularly focused on the blend of elegance and individuality in the outfits.

“As a fashion judge I’ll be seeking out fashion that seamlessly blends elegance with a splash of individuality,” Danielle explains.

“Living in Townsville, where we’re blessed with a perpetual summer vibe, our fashion focus leans more towards general appropriateness rather than winter-specific attire.”

Danielle says accessories are a critical aspect of judging, with headwear often playing a pivotal role in an outfit’s success.

“Accessories, especially headwear, can turn a lovely outfit into a winning look. I’ll be on the lookout for those standout pieces that add a touch of whimsy or sophistication,” Danielle says. She believes that a well-chosen hat can significantly enhance an ensemble.

“As they say, a well-chosen hat can make even a bad hair day look fabulous!”

New to assessing men’s fashion, Danielle offers specific advice to male participants.

“As a relative newbie to assessing men’s Fashion on the Field, I would encourage the boys to abide by the basic principle—never exceed more than three colours or tones in an outfit,” she advises. “Perhaps most importantly, fit is everything! A well-fitted suit is every woman’s (and judge’s) kryptonite.”

Danielle says she is most looking forward to witnessing the creativity and effort that participants put into their outfits.

“More than anything, I’m excited to witness how race goers adapt to suit the spirit of the Winter Racing Carnival.

“I truly appreciate the time, effort and imagination that goes into crafting these outfits.”

Annaleisa says she will be looking for fashion which combines elegance, sophistication and creativity.

“Key factors include attention to detail, adherence to racing fashion guidelines, seasonal appropriateness and the overall confidence and poise with which the outfit is worn,” Annaleisa explains. “Originality and a well-balanced, polished appearance are also essential criteria for evaluating contestants’ outfits.”

As for race day make-up, Annaleisa says the goal should be a harmonious look which compliments an outfit and reflects personal style.

Danielle says she anticipates a general make up trend towards achieving a doll-like appearance with “otherworldly, glassy skin - think fresh and luminous reminiscent of Emma Stone’s Oscar appearance”.

“Opting for a subtle approach rather than heavy-handed application will be key. Eyes adorned with bright colours, delicately applied, complemented by plush lips that add a touch of allure.

“On the other hand, makeup practices to avoid include dominant eyebrows that are thicker than your pinky finger, eyelashes that are so dramatic they weigh more than a small cat, overly dark and smokey eyes suited only to a nightclub - it may be winter, but it is still daytime in Townsville - so less is more.”

For the Explore Property Munro & Co Ladies Day fashion judges, fashionplays a crucial role in creating an unforgettable atmosphere at the Winter Racing Carnival at Cluden Park.

“The Winter Racing Carnival isn’t just about horseracing, it’s a fabulous display of style and sophistication,” Danielle explains. “Fashion adds that touch of glamour and excitement, creating an unforgettable atmosphere. I find it also adds that regal quality to the event. It’s one of the few times a year you have an excuse to channel your inner Kate Middleton and step into that elegant world for a day.

“I love that what started as a strategy to engage female attendees has blossomed into a cornerstone of race-day culture, where spectators are central to the ethos of the sport. “Likewise, I see a big role for racing carnivals to be the canary in the coalmine, acting as a platform for launching and influencing contemporary fashion trends.”

Annaleisa says Fashions on the Field competitions contributed to the atmosphere, honours tradition and allows attendees to showcase creativity and style.

The races are a wonderful opportunity for people to dress up,

“Attending events like the Townsville Winter Racing Carnival provides a great opportunity for the women of Townsville & surrounds to showcase their style,” Annaleisa says. “The Winter Racing Carnival in Townsville not only celebrates horse racing but also fosters a sense of community and social gathering.

“It’s a time for locals and visitors alike to come together, enjoy the races, and showcase their fashion sense.”
