Police arrest man at South Townsville after street fight slashing

Police have arrested a man who allegedly slashed another man in a fight in South Townsville.

A MAN is recovering in hospital after being stabbed multiple times during a street fight at South Townsville.

Police were called to Nelson St about 1.20pm on Tuesday after multiple triple-0 calls reporting a man had been stabbed.

Acting Senior Sergeant Jayson Cooke said it’s understood the men were working together at the residence, and do not live there.

“There was an altercation between two men working on a shed in a residence in South Townsville. As a result, the victim has sustained what appear to be knife wounds and has been transported to the Townsville University Hospital for medical treatment,” Sgt. Cooke said.

“The victim is a local man of 38-years of age.”

On arrival, police found both men in the area and deployed a taser on the suspect.

The alleged offender, a man in his 20s, was arrested at the scene.

The victim, a 38-year-old man, suffered serious injuries and was treated by critical care paramedics.

It’s understood the man sustained multiple stab wounds to his back and a slash to his throat.

“The altercation has commenced out here on the roadway and then continued back into the driveway where the injuries were sustained by the victim,” Sgt Cooke said.

“Those injuries are non-life threatening at this stage.”

Police set up a crime scene in the quiet street on Tuesday afternoon to begin their investigation.

Multiple detectives and uniformed officers remained at the scene for hours following the incident.

“These men are known to each other, they were working together building a shed on this site, this is not where they live, this is a workplace for them. They appear to be work colleagues,” Sgt Cooke said.

The suspect is yet to be formally charged and is receiving medical attention for injuries sustained during the altercation while under police guard.
