Construction workers have traded their tools for the tees to raise more than $20,000 for premature and sick babies at Mater Private Hospital Townsville.

The 21 teams of workers joined a team of Mater medics for ‘Golf for Good’, a charity golf day raising funds for Mater Little Miracles, this year’s 9 Telethon, supporting essential research and equipment for babies.

The tradies are currently building the hospital’s new maternity unit, as part of a $40 million expansion to move the Mater’s Hyde Park maternity and renal services to the Mater’s Pimlico campus.

Mater Foundation chief executive officer Andrew Thomas said the charity day has provided lifesaving support for ill babies.

“Every dollar they have raised will go towards supporting around 2,000 sick and premature babies who are cared for at Mater hospitals each year,” he said.

Construction firm Paynters organised the event and manages the team of builders working on the hospital’s expansion.

Paynters senior project manager Paul Goldsack said selecting Mater for this year’s 9 Telethon was a no-brainer.

“We have a strong relationship with Mater and appreciate the incredible care its teams provide for sick and premature babies,” he said.

“We had a lot of fun on the course, and although Mater’s team didn’t win, they certainly went home happy after we raised $20,813 to support vulnerable babies in Townsville and across Queensland.”
