Defence, agriculture, mining and the Olympic Games will be high on the agenda when State and federal Liberal National Party of Queensland politicians gather in Townsville over the weekend to learn more about the challenges and opportunities facing North Queensland.

Last held in Townsville in 2019, the Latitudes North conference is traditionally hosted in a different North Queensland city every two years, allowing LNP pollies to engage with party members and invited guests through a series of panel discussions and speeches.

This year the conference will take place at Rydges Conference and Events Centre, where

Premier David Crisafulli will open the conference on Saturday morning.

Townsville-based Queensland Senator, and Shadow Minister for Resources and Northern Australia, Susan McDonald, said the event would allow rank-and-file party members to hear about a multitude of topics impacting how we live, work and play in NQ.

“There will be some robust and frank discussions and I’ll be making sure our State Ministers come away with a very clear understanding of what needs to happen in their portfolios to help North Queensland,” Ms McDonald said.

“Of particular interest will be mining approvals and I’m pleased to see Minister Dale Last has made some really positive changes to smooth the way for that sector. More mines means more royalties to improve roads and infrastructure, and we absolutely should be looking to facilitate a new mining boom in North West Queensland.

“Federally, I and my Northern colleagues Herbert MP Phillip Thompson and Dawson MP Andrew Willcox will make sure the Albanese Government is constantly reminded of its obligations to our region in regards to roads, housing and mining activity.”

Given that Townsville was a fast-growing hub for defence, trade and tourism, Shadow Assistant Minister for Defence Phillip Thompson said it deserved strong investment to drive jobs and infrastructure.

“Latitudes North showcases the Coalition’s commitment to North Queensland, and I will be continuing to push the Albanese Labor Government to deliver for our city, ensuring Townsville and our region get a fair go,” Mr Thompson said.

Townsville’s excited state MPs Adam Baillie, Natalie Marr and Janelle Poole threw their support behind the event saying it would provide the opportunity for politicians to listen and ensure the government had the right priorities.
