A Townsville campervan and caravan dealer has made nearly double the number of sales it did at the same time last year as COVID-19 restrictions are lifted.

Jayco Townsville Partner Brendan Lew said the recreational vehicle industry was in unprecedented times and that his business was struggling to keep up with demand.

“Compared to the same time last year our sales are up upwards to 30-40 per cent,” he said.

“We could see that once this pandemic did start to come to an end and people wouldn’t be travelling overseas, they would be looking to by a caravan as a form of getting away.

“Realistically we thought we’d have a 10-15 per cent increase, it’s just hard to cope with at the moment but it’s a good situation to be in.”

Mr Lew said during the height of the pandemic restrictions operations at the Jayco factory had slowed down, which was a cause for the delay in stock.

“Now just getting it out of the factory, we just can’t get it quick enough,” he said.

“It’s obviously going to be a benefit for businesses in the next 12 months or until people feel confident about overseas travel again.

“People will be travelling around Australia.

“And there are so many things to see and do here.”
