The Annual HopeStars Domestic Violence Awareness Fundraiser, now in its 5th year, was again a sold-out affair.
Event organiser, Teresa Hope, said the event was a combination of education, creating community and fun.
“It has a regular following of local businesses, community services and groups as well as individuals who attend each year, or donate amazing raffle prizes and support the fundraising on the day.”
The event, held each year at Brothers Leagues Club, who also generously support the event, attracted a 110-plus crowd.
Some of the local supporters of the event included Zonta Townsville Metro, Rotary Saints Townsville, JCU, Explore Property Munro & Co, Star 106.3 and Coles Bushland Beach.
Teresa said the mega raffle was a highlight and the guest speakers were a wonderful mix of personal experiences and useful information.
Keynote speaker Regional Coordinator Suicide Prevention North Queensland Carmen Delaney highlighted the relationship between domestic violence and increased risk with suicide and suicide attempts.
Carmen shared her personal journey that has led her to the work she now does across regions.
Her takeaway message was ‘Connection is key to keeping loved ones safe’.
Through Carmen’s work in the community, including volunteering with CORES, she advocates for a grassroots approach to suicide prevention.
“CORES provides free training to increase community awareness around suicide, supporting us to ask the important questions and how to connect people with the help they need.”
Townsville Police Sergeant Elise Feltham and North Queensland Domestic Violence Resource Service CEO Verity Bennett, as part of the recently established DV Action Group - Townsville Integrated Response, announced the establishment of the DV Pet Protect Program, a program aiming to keep all the family safe from domestic and family violence.
Ms Bennett said while there were options for victim-survivors to access safe shelter as they flee domestic and family violence, there are limited options to support the “whole family”, namely their pets, to also access safe haven”.
The event raised over $2400 to be shared with both CORES and DV Pet Protect.
