Home Hill’s new pool owners on the hunt for lifeguards, training provided

Home Hill Pool and Caravan Park has new owners – and one has a surprising world record to his name. See what their plans are for the town’s gem.

Trent Grimsey holds the record for the fastest swim across the English Channel, completing the sea voyage in six hours and 55 minutes.

But what comes next after setting a world record?

For Mr Grimsey, he became a pool man, purchasing his first public pool in Bowen alongside wife Anna in 2019.

The pool business rapidly expanded into Mission Beach, Tully, Cardwell – and now Home Hill joins the list.

The Grimsey’s took over Home Hill Swimming Pool and Caravan Park on Monday, May 1.

“We’ve got a lot of experience running aquatic facilities, but this is a first for a caravan park,” Mr Grimsey said.

“Once I got my head around the park booking system I was right.”

The small and centrally located Home Hill Caravan Park is regarded as one of the friendliest in the Burdekin and guests get free access to the adjoining council pool.

The Grimsey’s were awarded the pool lease by Burdekin Shire Council and don’t plan to make big changes – aside from going on a hiring spree.

“We’re keeping John from Burdekin Swim Lessons and we’ve still got Kim and Mick our swim coaches,” Mr Grimsey said.

“The only change is we’ll staff the pool up. The last operators worked all the hours themselves but we’re going to hire people and train them.”

The pool is currently on the hunt for locals interested in becoming lifeguards.

Making the right hiring choices is important to the new owners, who still live in Bowen.

“Home Hill is between all our pools which made it quite an attractive decision,” Mr Grimsey said.

“If something happens, I can be there within an hour.”

Right now the Grimsey’s are staying in town as they are settling into the new facility.
