The popular Jennifer Board Memorial Football Carnival is back for a fourth year, with food trucks, a big screen, $4 beers, and a new date in winter.

Carnival organiser, and close friend of the late Jennifer Board, Luke Southgate, said he had to give a big shoutout to Football QLD and FQ Northern for quickly moving their games when it was discovered they clashed with the carnival’s Saturday date.

“This is the first time we’ve held the carnival in winter,” Mr Southgate said.

“We realised recently that a bunch of normal soccer club games were also happening on July 5 and a lot of people who wanted to play in the carnival were about to pull out.”

Mr Southgate said it only took one email to Football QLD and FQ Northern explaining the situation for the organisations to move their local games to Sunday.

The Jennifer Board Memorial Football Carnival is normally held at the end of the year, but feedback about the heat had prompted carnival organisers to try for a winter date this year.

The carnival is always held at the Estate FC grounds in South Townsville.

“Jennifer played futsal pretty much every night, and she was signing up to play for Estates FC when she was killed,” Mr Southgate said.

“So we always use the Estates FC grounds.”

Jennifer Board was killed in 2021 after being struck by a speeding car on Ross River Rd.

Jennifer Board, 22, was riding her motorbike along Ross River Rd on a Friday night when a stolen Hyundai and a Holden Statesman crashed, forcing the Holden onto the other side of the road and hitting the woman’s sports bike. She died from the impact.

The carnival is a round-robin style knockout competition, starting in the morning and running through until only two teams remain for a final championship game around 8pm.

“Our social competition is completely sold out, but we have space left for six more teams in our competitive division,” Mr Southgate said.

“Team can be anywhere from six to twelve players, and we play 18 minute halves on quarter-sized fields.”

The carnival will also feature food trucks, a $4 beer happy hour courtesy of Tipsy Taps Co, and a big screen that will play the NRL at night.

Money raised on the night will be donated to the Angel Paws dog rescue and rehoming charity.
