TEENAGERS vying to be a Cowboys Spirit cheerleader no longer have to wait until their 18th birthday, with the new Cowboys Pep Squad widening the net to include 16 year olds.

Cowboys Spirit manager and former Cowboys cheerleader Sally Treveton is in her 10th year leading the cheerleading team and said this was the first time a development squad would join the professional team for on-field routines.

Ms Treveton first joined the Cowboys at their inception in 1995, so knows what it takes to perfect the on-field dance numbers.

“I came from a gymnastics competitive background; it was a transition back in ‘94/’95 when the Cowboys formed they formed a cheer squad and I naturally progressed over as I saw it as an opportunity to continue dancing and continue acrobatics,” she said.

“The best part is seeing the girls’ performances come together. As a manager, choreographer and a coach that’s the ultimate satisfaction to see the girls realise all their hard work and effort really come out on the field.”

She said there’s a fair bit of preparation that goes into each routine, with up to six hours of official training a week and a lot of “homework” for the girls to work on in their own time.

Cowboys Pep Squad member of three weeks Emily Puglisi said she’s loving the opportunity so far.

“I thought it would be the perfect transition into the Spirit Club, instead of being thrown straight into the deep end you get to go behind the scenes and see the responsibility of the Spirit Club,” the 19-year-old said.

“I just love the atmosphere of getting out on the field and getting the crowd involved, the charity events and other events we will attend.”

As for the Cowboys chances for the 2019 season, the two ladies were unanimous:

“They’ll go all the way this year for sure.”
