There are grave fears of loss of life following a horror truck and vehicle crash that has closed the Bruce Highway south of Townsville.
Queensland Ambulance Service confirmed at 4.10pm that one person was being assessed for “life-threatening injuries” following the two-vehicle accident at Cromarty at 1.50pm on Sunday.
A QAS spokeswoman referred additional questions about the status of the individual to Queensland Police Service.
QPS are yet to confirm whether or not the accident involved a fatality.
QAS initially stated that two people were trapped in the wreckage of their vehicle.
The QAS spokeswoman said one of the patients had been assessed with minor injuries and had declined transport to hospital.
The truck driver is not believed to be harmed physically.
Queensland Police Service earlier confirmed it had responded to reports of an accident involving a truck and vehicle.
A QPS spokeswoman said the highway was closed in both the north- and south-bound lanes and would be for some time.
Queensland Fire Department dispatched two emergency crews, one of which remains on scene.
Cromarty is between Mount Surround and Nome.
The crash is near Emmett Creek.
The Department of Transport and Main Roads confirmed that the Bruce Highway was cut to all traffic at Emmett Creek and delays were expected.
Diversions were in place via the Woodstock Giru Road and Flinders Highway.
The diversions are not suitable for heavy vehicles.
A photograph supplied to News Corp appears to show that the north-bound truck has braked heavily and veered across and off the south-bound lane, coming to rest behind a crash barrier.
A witness said the vehicle in front her allegedly crossed the centreline and into the path of the truck.
The woman said the vehicle in which she was a passenger was lucky not to have also been struck by the truck, calling it a narrow miss.
She said she had been told that the road would be blocked for six hours.
QPS confirmed at 3.50pm that Forensic Traffic Unit investigators were on scene due to the severity of the incident.
A spokesperson advised motorists to avoid the area entirely.
It is the latest incident that has completely severed the infamously dangerous and flood-prone Bruce Highway,
Meanwhile, a young girl has been badly injured after falling from a tree at a popular public park in Townsville.
Queensland Ambulance Service confirmed that the primary school-aged child had fallen about 3 metres from the tree at Sherriff Park in Mundingburra at 12.13pm on Sunday.
The recreational area is part of Ross River Parkway.
A QAS spokeswoman said the girl was transported to Townsville University Hospital in a stable condition.
