Outraged residents have captured video of audacious youths in a convoy of stolen cars doing burnouts and hooning right outside the Cleveland Youth Detention Centre.
Youths in four stolen cars — including a white Ergon Energy ute (Ford Ranger), white Holden Colorado and white Toyota Yaris — appeared eager to flaunt their exploits to a captive audience in the juvenile detention facility on Old Common Rd, Belgian Gardens on Monday afternoon.
Onlookers were left in utter disbelief as tyres screeched and dust billowed as the cars put on a performance more suited to a Fast and Furious set than the front yard of a facility meant to reform troubled youths.
A man filming the incident can be heard saying: “And again? Just another bloody typical day in Townsville. Three freaking stolen cars outside the youth detention centre.”
The white Holden Colorado — stolen from a home Hynch St, Wulguru on Sunday — was found on fire at Mustang Crt near the Townsville Airport about 8.50pm on Monday.
While the stolen Ergon ute was crashed into a pole and abandoned in Mount Louisa the same day.
The stolen Toyota Yaris was stolen from Yarrawonga Dr, Castle Hill and was found on Old Common Rd, Belgian Gardens about 2.25am on Tuesday.
Police believe the Yaris was used to steal a Isuzu MUX from an address at Hinton Court, Deeragun about 2.45pm on Monday. The stolen Isuzu was still outstanding on Tuesday.
The incident comes after the Townsville Bulletin recently joined District Duty Officer Senior Sergeant Darren Randall for a ride along and he said youths in stolen cars would often frequent the road outside Cleveland Youth Detention Centre, trying to “show off to their mates.”
