The successful reputation of the 3rd Brigade public affairs cell has gone international, with Townsville’s team now teaching Papua New Guinea soldiers to build a stronger connection with their community.

After receiving a request from the PNGDF last year, the North Queensland team worked hard on developing a smartphone course that would develop digital media skills.

Major Taylor Lynch from the 3rd Brigade Public Affairs cell was one of the pioneers of the course and has seen an increase in participants and enthusiasm since its beginning.

“The course covers basic photography and videography using the smartphones every soldier carries while training or on operations,” Major Lynch said.

“Soldiers in the PNGDF were already taking photos of their activities on their phones, the course has just empowered them to hone this craft and produce imagery of a higher quality.”

“We’ve seen course participants implement their skills to capture imagery during training activities and most recently during the PNGDF’s humanitarian assistance to flooding in East Sepik Province, and the landslide in Enga Province.

“As international confidence grows, more tourism and foreign investment will come to Papua New Guinea, and inevitably the lives of average Papua New Guineans will improve too. But it starts with telling the PNGDF’s story, and that’s achieved with good imagery of what they do day to day.”

Since October last year, courses have been conducted on bases in Wewak, Lae and Port Moresby.

Colonel Boni Aruma (PNGDF), Deputy Commander of the 3rd Brigade said that this course allows for wider coverage of exercises and training.

“It means a trained soldier is able to capture impactful stories and photos wherever the PNGDF is engaged for public messaging. By doing that soldiers and officers are contributing to enhancing the positive image of the force,” Colonel Aruma said.

“3rd Brigade’s contributions in conducting smartphone courses empowers trained operators to contribute towards selling the PNGDF in a positive way and goes to reinforce the strong and enduring relationship between the ADF and PNGDF.”
