Police hunt for man after violent edged weapon attack in Darwin

Tuesday, February 6: A man has suffered a gruesome injury and a woman’s head requires medical treatment after the pair were attacked by a stranger on a Darwin street.

NT Police Northern Watch Commander Clinton Stewart said the pair were assaulted with an edged weapon on Smith St – near McLachlan St – at 10.43pm Monday.

Sergeant Stewart said the offender fled the scene and had not been arrested, but was described as a man in his early 20s and was last seen wearing a red shirt.

He urged the public to contact police on 131 444 with any information relating to the incident.

Sergeant Stewart said the man was struck on the arm and the woman suffered a head injury.

St John NT Territory Response Manager Craig Garraway said the man’s arm was a “nasty injury” and the weapon “penetrated to the bone”.

He said paramedics took the man and woman to Royal Darwin Hospital for treatment.

In an unrelated incident, Mr Garraway said paramedics also responded to a single vehicle rollover near the Palmerston fire station about 4.15pm Monday, though only one of the three occupants needed to be taken to hospital with minor injuries.

In a separate incident, Sergeant Stewart said emergency services responded to a structure fire in Wulagi at 8.45pm Monday.

He said the residence’s sole occupant exited the building and did not suffer any injuries.

Sergeant Stewart said an investigation into the fire would continue on Tuesday.

Man arrested on suspicion of bashing woman unconscious at Malak

Friday, February 2: A man has been arrested on suspicion of bashing a woman unconscious in Darwin’s northern suburbs.

In a statement released on Friday morning, NT Police said they received reports at about 1pm Thursday a 34-year-old woman “had been assaulted and was unconscious” at an address in Fawcett Ct, Malak.

“The woman was conveyed to Royal Darwin Hospital (RDH) with a significant head injury,” the statement read.

“A 38 -year-old man, known to the woman, was arrested nearby and remains in police custody.”

Detectives from the Major Crime Unit continue to investigate.

Any witnesses are urged to contact police on 131 444 and quote reference number 24030948.

In an unrelated matter, also at Malak, NT Police are calling for witnesses to a domestic violence assault in the vicinity of Rickards Ct last month.

Police said that at about 11pm on Friday, January 19, they received reports that a 36-year-old man was assaulted, sustaining leg injuries that required treatment at the RDH, by “an individual who was known to him”.

“Police are continuing to work to locate that individual,” NT Police said in a statement.

Attempted armed robbery doesn’t go to plan

Thursday, February 1: An attempted hold up of a service station in Katherine overnight hasn’t gone to plan with the assailants only managing to score themselves an ice cream.

Three offenders entered the service station wearing balaclavas armed with weapons around 5am and demanded money from the cashier before a member of the public intervened.

No further details are known at this stage, but the intervention of the member of the public was enough to send the three offenders fleeing.

NT News has attempted to reach out to the business involved, believed to be a United Service Station, for more information.

A local to the area said he believes the business “may be shut” following the incident.

Police are appealing to the public for any information that may assist in identifying the offenders.

Anyone who witnessed the incident, observed anything suspicious near the service station around 5am, or have any relevant information, are urged to contact police or Crime Stoppers.

Two men arrested in relation to CBD sexual assault

NT Police have charged two men in relation to a sexual assault of a woman that took place in the Darwin CBD earlier this month.

Police allege the pair, aged 36 and 38, sexually assaulted a woman on January 14 in the Darwin CBD.

The woman did not know either man before the incident.

Police heard about the assault four days after the alleged incident, and Sex Crimes detectives have been investigating since receiving the information.

Police arrested both men without incident on Tuesday morning, and have charged both with one count of sexual intercourse without consent.

They were both remanded to appear in the Darwin Local Court on Wednesday.

Police investigate Karama assault

Top End detectives are seeking witnesses to an aggravated assault in Karama on Sunday which left a man being treated in hospital.

Police said around 8.15pm on Sunday officers received a report that a 37-year-old man had been assaulted near the intersection of McMillans Road, Lakes Crescent and Malak Crescent.

The man had earlier confronted an unknown group of offenders about an unlawful entry in the area.

Police said the man suffered injuries and was conveyed to Royal Darwin Hospital for treatment.

Police are seeking witnesses in the area who may have seen the assault and have also requested dashcam footage. Anybody with details contact 131444, and quote case number 2400010055.

Security guard attacked in Bakewell, four teenagers arrested

Four teenagers have been arrested after a security guard was allegedly assaulted at a Bakewell supermarket on Australia Day.

Around 3.30pm on 26 January, the group of teenagers entered the supermarket and allegedly stole food and drink items from the shelves.

A nearby security guard attempted to move the group along when he was allegedly assaulted, suffering injuries to his face.

On Sunday morning, members from Strike Force Trident attended a residence in Moulden whereby four teenagers aged between 13 and 17 were arrested and charged with aggravated robbery.

Baseball bat wielding teens rob delivery driver

NT Police have arrested two 15-year-olds and a 16-year-old male following a robbery in Karama on Sunday night.

A large group of youths approached a delivery driver, allegedly brandishing a baseball bat, taking his wallet and demanding his moped just before 6.30pm.

Police were immediately alerted to the incident with a patrol locating the damaged moped near a Karama service station a short time later.

Two of the males were apprehended later on Sunday night with the third alleged offender arrested on Monday morning.

Police efforts are ongoing efforts to locate the other offenders involved.

The victim wasn’t injured in the robbery with charges expected to be laid later on Monday. NT Police are urging anyone with information to contact CrimeStoppers and quote reference number NTP2400010055.
