A man from the remote Bulman community north east of Katherine has been left stranded after his only mode of transport was stolen and crashed in Fannie Bay early Tuesday.
Peter Miller, a director at the Sunrise Health Service (Bulman), said he was “shocked” after learning his car had been stolen around 3am and totalled less than an hour later.
“It’s all over red rover for me and my family,” he said.
“I got the shock of my life when I found out that today I have become a victim of all the stuff that’s happening around the Territory.”
The crash happened outside Simple Finance Solutions, with local office workers arriving to the sight of the wreck.
Ruth Palmer from the Property Council of Australia, which shares the office space, said CCTV captured the moment the stolen car flipped, with youths seen fleeing the scene.
“We’ve only just had these cameras put up in the last few months, so luckily we did,” she said.
“You can see those youths escape and run away on foot.”
Mr Miller, who had planned to insure the vehicle this Friday, is now stranded, with no way to return home.
“That’s about 800 kilometres to get back to my community,” he said.
“I can’t fix it—it’s written off now.”
CLP Member for Fannie Bay Laurie Zio said the incident highlighted the need for tougher youth crime reforms.
“Change won’t happen overnight, but we need to put these kids on a different path,” she said.
As Mr Miller looks for a way home, he’s hoping for help.
“All I need is a replacement car,” he said.
Northern Territory Police are investigating the incident.
