The “priorities and time frames” for the much touted City deal between the Federal and Territory governments are still under discussion.
Neither the Turnbull nor the Gunner government could give a clear indication of what progress had been made since the memorandum of understanding was signed in May last year.
The next round of discussions will take place next month.
Infrastructure Minister Paul Fletcher said the Federal Government was committed to delivering City deals for all state and territory capitals where other levels of government were willing.
“A memorandum of understanding between the Commonwealth and the Northern Territory was signed in May 2017 as an important step towards a future City deal for Darwin that will drive investment, jobs and make life better for communities in the region,” he said.
“The Commonwealth and Northern Territory governments have been discussing potential priorities and time frames for a future Darwin City deal.” Chief Minister Michael Gunner echoed those sentiments, adding the Darwin City deal would position the CBD as an economic driver for the NT.
“The NT Government has already invested $100 million towards rejuvenating the CBD and we hope the Federal Government will match this,” he said. “Negotiations are progressing well, with the next round of discussions taking place in February. “
Solomon MP Luke Gosling called for the City deal to be finalised quickly.
“It’s disappointing to see the Prime Minister spruiking a second City deal for Tasmania while ours is yet to be signed after nine months,” he said. “PM, get on a plane!
“The Turnbull Government talks big on their commitment to Northern Territory development, but we’ve seen precious little when it comes to action.”
The Turnbull Government announced its Smart Cities Plan in April 2016. It has signed six MOUs, including Darwin, Launceston, Hobart and Townsville.
The City deals for Townsville were completed in a month.
