NT should create a border bubble with neighbouring COVID-19 safe states even if it’s unconstitutional, Territory Alliance deputy leader Robyn Lambley has said.
Yesterday, Ms Lambley said the party was “not concerned” that the creation of a travel bubble was potentially unconstitutional, saying preventing job losses was more important.
Chief Minister Michael Gunner, when announcing the NT would open its borders to the rest of Australia on July 17, said he had received advice it would be potentially unconstitutional to open the Territory’s borders to Western Australia and South Australia only.
He said the risk was heightened in the NT because of the lack of statehood.
WA Premier Mark McGowan has also flagged receiving similar advice on travel bubbles.
But Ms Lambley was undeterred.

“What jurisdiction is going to pour money into proving or disproving that through some legal battle?” she said.
“It just seems immaterial really, it’s common sense to open the borders.”
Mr Gunner said “Terry’s Alliance” could be flippant about borders as they did not have to wear the responsibility if something went wrong.
