FAMILIAR faces from the far-right Rise Up Australia Party are among the line up of political candidates running for Terry Mills’ new Territory Alliance Party in next year’s election.
The Territory Alliance announced today its first batch of endorsed candidates for the NT Legislative Assembly 2020 election.
The party’s founding MLA Terry Mills, who will recontest for his seat of Blain, announced the list in parliament this morning which includes:
Regina McCarthy
Former Rise Up Australia candidate Regina McCarthy has joined the ranks of the Territory Alliance to run for the seat of Daly.
The mother of three claims her views have “evolved” since being a part of the far-right Rise Up party, which strongly advocates against multiculturalism and Muslim immigration.
“Those (views) are reserved for that time,” she said.
“People do grow in their thinking and develop their ways and ideas.
“I have made the decision to stand with Territory Alliance.
“This is where I am and I’m very happy to be here.”
Ms McCarthy has worked with the Nauiyu Nambiyu Community Government Council (Daly River), Ironbark Aboriginal Corporation, Murin Association and SAFE NT.
“Serving others, having compassion for others, being kind to others and looking out for others,” she said.
“Being a member of Territory Alliance is a call to serve the community.
“I want to be in the business of serving and looking out for others and supporting families.”
Danial Kelly
Dr Danial Kelly will be the Territory Alliance candidate for the seat of Casuarina.
A lawyer and educators, Dr Kelly has worked mainly in the areas of Aboriginal law and education projects in the NT and in Indonesia.
Currently a senior lecturer in Law at Charles Darwin University, he’s previously worked at Alawa Primary School, NT School of Languages and the North Australian Aboriginal Justice Agency (NAAJA).
The father of four is also known for being very religious and has voiced an opposition to same-sex marriage and abortion in the past.
“(Religion) is definitely not a part of the Territory Alliance platform — it’s not a religious party,” he said.
“You don’t have to believe in God to be a candidate.”
Dr Kelly said he believed most Territorians had moved beyond the partisan approach of left or right when it came to government.
“The context of the NT is not the same as down south,” he said.
“We don’t need imported second-hand political ideologies; we need locally relevant solutions to the problems we face.
“Parliament needs a shake up; it needs to be freed of the mere tribalism that we have become used to. My hope is to be part of this change for the NT.”
Andrew Bedwell
Police sergeant Andrew Bedwell will be the Territory Alliance candidate for Drysdale.
Mr Bedwell is a detective with the NT Police and has over 17 years experience in remote WA and NT locations.
Highly skilled in planning and negotiation, Mr Bedwell has completed many criminal operations targeting criminal drug networks and major crimes.
Married with three children, he also has a Master of Business Administration from the Australian Institute of Business.
“Community development has been the focus of my professional and private life,” he said.
“I am putting my hand up as a candidate with Territory Alliance to continue in community development in a broader way.
“The average person from within community feels a general disconnect from their elected members.
“They don’t identify with the narrative of current mainstream politicians which generally does not reflect the real issues and concerns relevant to their community.”
Amelia Nuku
Anula resident Amelia Nuku will be the Territory Alliance candidate for the seat of Sanderson.
She has worked across the NT in the Vocational Education and Training sector for 24 years.
“It has been a dream of mine to represent the community of Sanderson, and I hope the community will give me the opportunity to represent them in government,” she said.
“I want Territorians to know that Territory Alliance will work hard to provide confidence in government and will bring back common sense in politics for the people.
“Our Vocational, Education and Training (VET) sector needs strengthening to ensure VET investment supports our local workforce and businesses.
“I want to do more within the business sector with investment in employment programs
and incentivising employers.
“I also want to provide independent oversight for all VET investment and expenditure.”
