An Antarctic blast will bring temps up to 15 degrees colder than average this week, with rain, hail and even snow forecast to hit Tassie.

Weatherzone’s James Rout said “a cold pool of air about 5-6 km above the surface will drift from near Antarctica towards Tasmania” towards the end of the week.

“This will help to develop a low-pressure system at the surface with a cold front,” Mr Rout said.

“The cold front should cross southeast Australia on Thursday into Friday, dragging up cold air from the south during Friday.

“Together with cloud cover and cooling showers and thunderstorms, this will make Friday as much as 10-15 degrees cooler than average across a large area … there may even be a dusting of snow over Tasmania’s highlands.”

Sky News Weather meteorologist Rob Sharpe warned Tasmania would see afternoon temperatures below 20 degrees.

“Late Thursday we’ll see winds pick up, the temperatures drop in the southeast and Friday will be the coldest day of the week for southeastern regions,” he said.

“There will even be some alpine snow with this event.”

Lake St Clair is forecast to see temperatures as low as 2 and 3 degrees Thursday to Saturday, with a daytime maximum of 11-13C — and Tassie’s coldest spot, Liawenee, is expected to see temps drop to zero on Friday.

He said for Hobart, there’ll be a chance of wet weather on Wednesday and Thursday.

“Then on Friday, it looks even wetter with those temperatures lowering to (a daytime maximum) of 19,” Mr Sharpe said.

Small hail and storms are also possible across the state, with further warnings and more accurate forecasts expected later in the week.
