Construction on a new park and ride facility designed to reduce Hobart-bound traffic from one of Tasmania’s fastest-growing regions has kicked off at Midway Point.

Minister for Infrastructure, Kerry Vincent, said the 66-vehicle space facility was one of three planned for the greater Hobart area, to provide commuters with increased access to public transport and more options when travelling into the CBD.

“The new facility in Midway Point will provide a safe and inviting space for local and surrounding communities with 59 parking spaces, two accessible spaces and five motorcycle spaces,” Minister Vincent said.

“By building new facilities that offer convenient access to bus services, more people should feel encouraged to see public and active transport as reliable travel options.

“Centrally located between shared pathways for the Midway Point and Sorell causeways, the new facility also allows easy access for active transport users.”

Sorell mayor, Janet Gatehouse, said she warmly welcomed progress on the new facility, which is slated for completion by the end of the year.

“As the fastest-growing municipality in Tasmania, Sorell Council warmly welcomes this additional infrastructure that provides opportunities to support our community to grow and thrive into the future,” Ms Gatehouse said.
