The tragic truth about road deaths in Australia

A woman who died from injuries sustained in an ATV crash on Friday has been remembered as a “delightful” human who was a “beautiful example of a giving heart”.

Joy Hayes died after the ATV she was riding rolled on to her on Scenic Hill Rd, near Huonville, about 12.30pm.

A Tasmania Police report said Ms Hayes was trapped beneath the vehicle and received medical treatment at the scene, but was not able to be saved.

The 82-year-old has been remembered by the Uthando Project of Tasmania, an organisation which makes dolls and stuffed animals for children in Africa.

“Joy was responsible for cutting out 100s of lovely dolls for Uthando family,” the organisation posted on Facebook.

“She also crocheted 60 beautiful doll dresses. Her work lives on with the children she so happily supported.

“She would have made lots of friends and helped many people. Thank you for caring for those less fortunate in the community.

“A delightful friend sadly missed. Condolences to her family. RIP, Joy.”

It is understood Ms Hayes ran the Anglican op shop in Huonville for more than 35 years.

Further tributes flowed from heartbroken community members.

“So sad to hear of Joy’s passing, so many beautiful memories. RIP dear friend,” Faye Gardner wrote.

“How tragic, she was a beautiful example of a giving heart. My condolences to her family,” Colleen Post wrote.

“Joy was an amazing lady, heartfelt condolences to all her family,” Matt Hunt said.

“A wonderful lady always helping others,” Marian Kemp posted.

Tasmania Police believe a car in the area at the time of the incident may be able to help with their investigation.

“Police would like to hear from the occupants of a white Toyota 4WD (believed to be a Landcruiser or Prado) which was on Scenic Hill Road at the time, who may have witnessed the crash,” a Tasmania Police statement said.

“Our thoughts are with the woman’s family and loved ones.”

A report is being prepared for the coroner.
