Hobart Airport says Jetstar’s decision to offer 20,000 extra seats between Hobart and Melbourne proves Tasmania is “the hot-ticket destination this summer”.
Tourism Industry Council of Tasmania CEO Amy Hills said it was a welcome New Year announcement in “a very competitive aviation market with all destinations vying for more flights and more seats”.
The extra seats will be added from February to June and see Jetstar operate six return services a day between the two capital cities.
Jetstar’s Head of Network, Fleet Strategy and Planning, Ted Knight said the 80 extra flights reflected growing demand from passengers.
“With strong demand for affordable travel, our 20,000 new low fares seats and more than 80 additional flights between Hobart and Melbourne will provide customers with more choice on when to take off,” he said.
“We always have great deals available, and with one-way fares currently starting from just $89, it’s a great time to book your next getaway to Melbourne.”
For airport CEO Norris it comes on top a record breaking 277,000 passengers travelling through the airport in December 2024 – an increase of 6000 passengers and a more than two per cent jump on the previous December record set five years ago.
He hailed the extra seats and flights.
“This is a massive 10 per cent increase on the number of seats in the first half of last year,” Mr Carter said.
“This is great news for the growing number of travellers keen to see our state, and it is great news for Tasmanians keen to get to Melbourne too.
“Hobart Airport is set to continue its record setting summer, with December rewriting the record books, January looking similarly strong, and now February has this huge boost.
“We’re keen to continue this trend, and that’s why we’re investing $200m in our terminal expansion and $130m in our runway for direct international flights.”
Ms Hills was delighted at the increased flights.
“So it’s positive that carriers like Jetstar are having the confidence to back our destination after what appears to have been a busy summer season,” she said.
“Not only does it give visitors more access to our island via Melbourne, which is a core route for Tassie, but also importantly travellers heading here for business events, as well as travelling Tasmanians.
The flights will be operated using the newest aircraft in Jetstar’s fleet, the quieter and more fuel efficient A320neo and A321neo LR, as well as the airline’s existing A320/1 aircraft.
The night works have restarted on the Hobart Airport runway upgrade after a temporary summer shutdown.
This means the overnight construction closures of the runway from 10pm to 6am have recommenced.
