This Hobart market was a humble 12 stalls with “like five florets of broccoli” just 16 years ago. Now with dozens of stalls and “five million” florets, it has just been ranked in the top 10 markets in the world. Read why:

For more than ten years Antonio and Joe Gretschmann have brought their organic milk and cheese direct to consumers at the Farm Gate Market.
“It’s great for us because it gets us right to the customers,” Mrs Gretschmann of Elgaar Farm said.
“Customers want to know where their food comes from- they want to talk to the producers, especially the farmers.”
Mr and Mrs Gretschmann moved to Northern Tasmania from Bavaria in 1986 after converting Mr Gretschmann’s longstanding family farm in Bobing, Germany to organic.
The family came to Tasmania during an “adventurous” period of life with their children, who now help out around the farm.
Their organic and authentic cheese, milk and yoghurts are available at the Harvest Market in Launceston and the Farm Gate Market in Hobart and their milk is available at a small selection of organic stores in the state.
Mrs Gretschmann said compared to markets in Europe the Farm Gate Market is much more personal,
“It’s almost a community feel,” she said. “People come with personal stories and you listen and you talk.
“It’s not only selling cheese, it’s a connection.”
Farm Gate Market was just ranked as one of the top ten best markets in the world list in globally recognised travel guide Lonely Planet’s “Best in Travel 2025” publication.
Farm Gate founder and owner Madi Peattie said when she started the market 16 years ago she never dreamt it would reach these heights.
“We had 12 stalls and only one fresh produce stall and they probably grew five florets of broccoli and that was it,”
“16 years on we’ve got like five million florets of broccoli,”
The global recognition for the market was as much to do with the relationships and community being built as it was about the beautiful Tasmanian produce, according to Ms Peattie, who said producers form strong bonds with their customers.
Ms Peattie said strict adherence to principles promoting Tasmanian made, sustainable and authentic products helped the markets success.
She said although she is technically the owner of the market, the customers and producers are the true owners and her team feel more like custodians.
Farm Gate Market runs every Saturday from 8.30am-1pm at 104 Bathurst Street, Hobart.
