Tasmania is joining the global book crawl for the first time, with four iconic Hobart bookshops on the list to visit and grab a stamp. There’s even a prize up for grabs.

You may think Hobart’s bookshop owners are all in stiff competition, but everyday they are sending potential customers to each other if the wanted book is not in stock.

“There is a connection between the bookshops, we are a community,” Hobart Book Shop owner Bronwyn Chalke said.

“People probably don’t realise that if one of us doesn’t have something we ring each other up,” she said.

Ms Chalk is joining Cracked and Spineless, Fullers Bookshop and Dymocks Hobart in the Global Book Crawl, and she hopes to share that community with more readers through the initiative.

The Global Book Crawl is a worldwide celebration of independent bookshops and those who love them.

Readers, writers, and booksellers across the world join forces for one week to encourage readers to visit a self-guided route through independent bookshops.

Director of Dymocks Hobart Simon Muller said the new Hunger Games book caused quite a stir with readers.

“It sold out Australia wide, we had to wait,” Mr Muller said, adding that there hadn’t been such a fuss over a book in years.

Owner of Fullers Bookshop Tim Jarvis said it was Hobart’s first time being a part of the Global Book Crawl.

Mr Jarvis said since taking over Fullers he has seen a community of readers that visit all the bookshops regularly, and he wanted to give them some recognition.

From April 21 – 27, booklovers who visit Fullers, Cracked and Spineless, Dymocks and Hobart Book Shop and get their global book crawl passport stamped will go into the draw to win 10 Penguin Random House books.

The passport can be found and dropped off at any of the participating bookstores.
