The head of Salmon Tasmania Luke Martin has stepped down after less than two years in the job – to be replaced by a former public service boss.

Dr John Whittington, the former Secretary of the Department of Primary Industries, Water and Environment, and currently CEO of the Blue Economy Cooperative Research Centre, will replace Mr Martin.

Mr Martin became the face of the salmon industry in May 2023 after 12 years at the helm of the Tourism Industry Council Tasmania.

He replaced Sue Grau, who lasted less than 18 months in the job.

The industry has been embroiled in controversy in recent weeks after the discovery of rotting salmon matter on southern Tasmanian beaches and live fish being dumped in containers.

Salmon Tasmania chairman Lyall Howard paid tribute to Mr Martin and said the industry was thrilled to have secured someone of Dr Whittington’s calibre and experience.

“Luke has been an outstanding advocate for our industry over the past two-years,” Mr Howard said.

“He has led our industry with passion, skill and determination whilst navigating the challenging circumstances with Macquarie Harbour.

“Without him, the west coast community would be facing an uncertain future.

“Luke will leave Salmon Tasmania with the respect and thanks of our industry from the very highest levels of our companies to the thousands of salmon workers and their families across the State.”

Mr Howard said the time was right to welcome Dr Whittington to the role.

“John has extensive experience with our industry’s regulatory and policy environment, and we are delighted that he will lead the industry through the exciting next chapter,” he said.

“There is no doubt we have had a difficult few months with the mortality event in the South-East and the intense activism focussed on the federal election.

“Dr Whittington is a highly respected and credible leader in our industry who is well placed to lead the industry through our next period. Following a fantastic couple of years with Luke, there is no one better to do the job.”

Dr Whittington is expected to take on the CEO role in the coming months.

Mr Martin has been contacted for comment.
