Aspiring human rights lawyer Madeleine McGregor will be studying at the prestigious University of Oxford after being announced as the Tasmanian Rhodes Scholar for 2022.

Her Excellency the Honourable Barbara Baker AC, Governor of Tasmania, made the announcement on Tuesday.

The Scholarship covers Oxford University fees as well as providing an annual stipend for living expenses, allowing Hobart-born Miss McGregor to undertake postgraduate studies of a Bachelor of Civil Laws and a Master of Philosophy in Law.

“I will be focusing on comparative and international human rights laws and the relationship between grassroots social movements and how they can translate into legal rights,” Miss McGregor said.

Miss McGregor was educated at St Michael’s Collegiate in Hobart before commencing a double degree at the Australian National University in Canberra of a Bachelor of Laws (Honours), specialising in International and Comparative Law, and a Bachelor of Economics.

She will graduate from the ANU at the end of the year before starting two years of study at the University of Oxford in late 2022.

“I have always been interested in human rights and inequality generally but one of my most influential opportunities in my legal studies so far was the time I spent working in the Kimberleys (in Western Australia) with First Nations people,” she said.

Miss McGregor said she planned to return to Australia after her studies to work as a human rights lawyer.

“I want to work both on legal cases and also in conceptualising human rights, not just as winning matters in courts but also as broader human rights campaigns and cultural shifts,” she said.

The Rhodes Scholarship is the oldest and one of the most prestigious international scholarships, which has enabled outstanding young people from across the world to study at the University of Oxford since 1902.

Miss McGregor has previously been awarded The Tuckwell Scholarship which has provided funding and mentorship by a scholar cohort during her undergraduate studies.
