A young Sandy Bay sailing team has won top honours at national championship
These young Tasmanian sailors have achieved the top spots at a South Australian race, taking home a prestigious prize. Their next step is to take on the world.

Tasmania’s young people have proved their at performing at the top of their game when it comes to sailing.
The Sandy Bay Sailing Club cadet team have taken out the top places at the International Cadet Australian Championship held at Port Lincoln in South Australia.
Not only did they dominate the podium with all three spots, they took out the Tillett Trophy for the strongest team overall.
Captain Sam Cooper, 16, said the team was training up to four times a week.
“We haven’t won in six years, so it was pretty special we won the Tillett Trophy this year,” he said.
“We had a really good, strong sense of team work this year.”
Sam sails against his sister, which he said was a friendly bit of competition he enjoyed.
The cadet team’s ages range from 12 to 16, who train before school and on the weekends.
The team took seven boats to the event, each is teamed by two people, a helm and a skipper.
“We were pretty excited,” Sam said when the team realised they had won the trophy.
Sandy Bail Sailing Club treasurer Tes Ashbolt said it was an achievement for the young team.
“It; s great that Tassie took out the entire podium,” she said.
First place was Sam Hooper and George Shugg, second place was Alex Ashbolt and Lachie Prior and third was Olive Hooper and Samantha Archer.
Over all, six Tasmanian teams placed in the top 12.
Next up is the international event in the Czech Republic later this year.
