Surfcoast Chargers’ new recruit Dexter Graham is leading division two in one important statistical area as his side cements a spot inside the Big V top four after eight rounds.

The Chargers, who finished last season just outside the finals in sixth place, started their 2024 campaign in ordinary fashion, dropping two of its first three games.

However, since then, it boasts a 4-1 record with Graham (26 points, seven rebounds) leading the scoring in their most latest win at Wurdi Baierr Stadium on Saturday night, a 87-72 triumph over Wallan, shooting 66 per cent from the field.

Senior coach David Scott said the roster had been bolstered by Graham’s arrival from Camberwell, with a shoulder injury restricting his output in 2023.

“The impact’s he’s had has been enormous for the team,” Scott said.

“He shares the ball well, defensively he brings a lot, a lot of intensity

“Our focus this season has been more around the defensive mindset.

“He’s fantastic at sharing the ball. And he can get points for us when needed.

“He’s certainly been a welcome addition to the team.”

Graham is leading division two for assists — picking up an incredible 12 against Mornington in Round 5 – and is seventh for average points.

He amassed a season-high 33 points against Mildura in Round 6 and 30 versus Craigieburn in Round 4.

The Chargers have also welcomed back Tyler Erard and Conrad Cooper – who led the league for boards in 2023 – plus added former Geelong Supercat Jason Reardon who is skippering the team.

“He’s leading by example for what we need, contributing across all areas,” Scott said of the SEABL champion.

“He’s a leader, he’s got a lot experience that he brings to the team.

“We’ve been fortunate to improve on the roster this season.”

Cooper pulled down 13 boards for the Chargers against Wallan on May 11 and is currently fourth in the competition overall for that benchmark.

Scott was proud to see an upwards trajectory, with the Chargers rising from bottom in 2022 to a finals shot this year.
