Support mechanisms needed to tackle Alice Springs’ alcohol-related issues

A local industry boss has weighed in on possible solutions to Alice Springs’ alcohol-related issues ahead of changing restrictions. Here’s what he suggests.

Alcohol-related issues in Alice Springs cannot be looked at from a supplier perspective only, an industry boss has said.

Iris Group Alice Springs chief operating officer Craig Jervis said alcohol-related issues were complex and required a balanced approach.

Iris Group owns six properties in Alice Springs, including the Todd Tavern.

“I think it’s far more complex than whacking more restrictions on a supply side – which is often the go-to from the government,” he said.

“If we want to see real change, we need to start looking at demand, not just supply.”

It comes after Chief Minister Natasha Fyles announced a ban on takeaway alcohol on Mondays and Tuesdays, with a short sales window between 3pm and 7pm on other days.

Mr Jervis said a demand-focused approach might mean relevant agencies – such as health and education – could require more resources.

“Alcoholics don’t just stop drinking because there’s a two-day liquor ban in Alice Springs, and where you’ve got hard drinkers, it doesn’t stop overnight,” he said.

“There needs to be programs and support mechanisms in place for these people.”

Mr Jervis said the takeaway alcohol ban could lead to more on-premise drinking.

“In terms of the bottle shops, we may be busier at periods,” he said.

“People might be sort of stockpiling in that even shorter window.”
