Support for the Indigenous Voice hits new lows in final week

The final opinion poll on the eve of the Voice to Parliament referendum shows support for the Yes vote remains low.

Support for the Yes campaign in the Voice to Parliament referendum has remained low just before voters head to the polls.

Australians opposed to the proposal were ahead of the the ‘Yes’ camp by 56 per cent to 38 per cent, according to the final poll by YouGov published on Thursday.

YouGov Director of Polling and Academic research, Amir Daftari, said a firm rejection was expected.

“Our final poll indicates a sweeping ‘No’ victory – with nearing six in 10 voters intending to cast a ‘No’ vote,” he said.

It comes after voters in favour of the yes vote dropped earlier this week.

According to a Newspoll conducted for The Australian, Labor’s primary vote slipped to its lowest level since the election and Prime Minister Anthony Albanese’s personal approval rating has dropped to a new low with his lead over Liberal leader Peter Dutton narrowing further.

Support for the Voice fell two more points to 34 per cent, which represents its lowest level of support since the referendum question was first proposed.

Those intending to vote no represent 58 per cent, with 8 per cent of voters undecided.

According to the poll, support for the Yes campaign has fallen below 50 per cent among younger voters.

Support for the no vote is now ahead among this crucial demographic.

The number of 18 to 34 year-olds who intend to vote no rose eight percentage points to 49 per cent. The yes vote dipped four points to 46 per cent, while the undecided almost doubled from 5 per cent to 9 per cent.

Only 24 per cent of voters aged over 65 said they would vote yes, and only 26 per cent of 50 to 64 year-olds were in favour of the Voice.

Only the 35 to 49 year-olds lifted a point to in favour of to 37 per cent. However, the no vote still remained stronger at 53 per cent.

In a blow to the Albanese government, the main decline in support was among Labor voters, with those saying they intended to vote yes dipping below 50 per cent for the first time.

The no vote lifted six points to 42 per cent while the yes vote slid six points to 48 per cent.

This latest Newspoll indicates a continued decline in support for the federal government and Mr Albanese, fuelled by cost-of-living pressures.

Labor’s primary vote fell a point to 34 per cent – four points down since mid-June.

Mr Albanese’s approval rating went into negative territory for the second time and satisfaction with his performance dropped two points to 45 per cent, the lowest level recorded for Mr Albanese since becoming prime minister.

Dissatisfaction with his performance as leader rose to 46 per cent.

The Coalition’s primary vote was unchanged at 36 per.

Mr Albanese’s lead on Mr Dutton is at its tightest margin since the election at 17 points.

Mr Dutton’s approval ratings rose five points to 37 per cent with a two-point fall in those dissatisfied with him to 50 per cent.
