Strange green light baffles motorists near Palmerston

A stunned Territorian has captured an eerie green light emanating from behind a group of trees. Could it be the result of glowing fungi, refracting light, or something more? TAKE THE POLL.

A Darwin local has captured a photo of an eerie green light emanating from behind a group of trees while driving down Tiger Brennan Drive towards Palmerston from Darwin.

Darwin City’s Dipshi Tayal said she was in the car with her family on Sunday night, when she first noticed the strange glow.

She said she could not figure out the source of the light.

“We were driving towards Palmerston around 7:45pm and we just noticed this green light,” she said.

“Our friends, who were in a different car, also saw it – which was good because I thought that maybe I was going crazy.”

The light coming out from behind the trees gives off real Fire in the Sky vibes, a 1993 movie based on the supposed true story of an Arizona logger who disappeared for five days following an encounter with an alleged UFO in 1975.

Ms Tayal said while little green men or flying saucers weren’t the first thing she thought of, a more logical answer had come to mind.

“We thought maybe there’s a chemical reaction, or something like that,” she said.

“When we started heading towards Palmerston, it kept on increasing and then after a while it just vanished, maybe behind clouds.”

Ms Tayal said the light lasted for about 15 to 20 minutes, before it disappeared, or when they lost sight of it.

The travellers also considered maybe they were witnessing aurora australis, before realising it wasn’t possible from this far north.

“My plans were to go to Norway this year, but I’m like ‘it’s OK I can see lights from here’,” she said.

There have been a number of strange glowing green lights witnessed coming from bushland trees and forests around the world, with the explanations behind the phenomena ranging from bioluminescence of fungi in decaying wood to the atmospheric refraction of light.

But maybe, on this occasion, there was something else behind the strange light in the trees? The same thing that was apparently in the Arizona sky on that fateful night nearly 50 years ago.

The truth is out there.
