St Mary’s star Ben Moloney has described the horrifying groin injury he suffered in the GFL grand final that caused him to be taken to hospital.

The midfielder had an opponent’s boot make contact between his legs which cut his urethra, causing uncontrollable bleeding during the Saints’ 45-point win against Leopold.

Moloney said the incident had caused some pain, but the constant flow of blood was the biggest worry on the day.

“It hurt at the time but it wasn’t enough for me to go off, so I kept playing, and a bit later in the quarter I could feel a bit of wetness in my shorts and I thought that was really weird,” he said.

“I then noticed blood and so I came off with about two minutes left and told the team that there was a fair bit going on downstairs.

“So they had a look, cleaned it up and they thought it might’ve been a cut from the boot but it didn’t get me there anyway.

“I passed blood and they couldn’t stop the flow so they said I needed to go and get checked.”

Moloney was sent to hospital where he received scans on Saturday night, and was discharged on Sunday after a catheter was inserted to prevent infection.

The Saint said it was disappointing to end his grand final in hospital, but it was a premiership he would always remember.

“It was really good to be able to visit the boys during their celebrations on Sunday, I got to the window and they saw me and really welcomed me in and presented me with my medal,” he said.

“It was quite hard to not be a part of the celebrations, I’m still a three-time premiership player but the feeling you get at the end of the game isn’t really there.

“I was hoping I’d get to celebrate with my family and take my kids up there but I wasn’t able to do that really.

“I definitely prefer the way I won 2019, the best on ground is irrelevant but just the game itself was unbelievable.

“I can’t see a game finishing like that again for a long time.

“I certainly won’t forget the 2022 premiership, but just not for the right reasons.”

‘Uncontrollable bleeding’: Shock toll of GF groin blow

Ben Moloney has been discharged from hospital after a nasty incident in the GFL grand final left the St Mary’s midfielder “peeing blood”.

The star Saint was sent to hospital at quarter time after he received an opposing boot to the groin during a contest early in the season decider.

Saints physical performance coach Todd Jones said Moloney was in good spirits despite the nasty injury.

“Beama (Moloney) unfortunately received a knock to the groin which can seem innocuous as it doesn’t overly hurt, but it cuts the urethra and results in uncontrollable bleeding,” he said.

“Unfortunately he will be with a catheter for at least a few weeks to avoid infection in the pelvis region.

“Somehow under heavy painkillers he still managed to come to the club to see the boys on the way home yesterday.”

Moloney received scans on his groin region on Saturday night and remained in hospital overnight as he recovered from the initial injury.

He was discharged from hospital on Sunday and will spend the next two-to-three weeks recovering before engaging in any physical activity.

Moloney was awarded the best-on-ground medal for his efforts in 2019, but was not able to repeat his efforts with Damian McMahon claiming the award for his performance in 2022.

After the game McMahon said he did not know what had happened on the field to Moloney, but he heard about the incident at a break in the game.

“He had a bit of an issue with his groin, he must’ve copped a bit of a knock or something because he was peeing blood at quarter time,” he said.

“Not sure what actually happened there, it was a bit bizarre but we’ll get around Ben and make sure he’s all good.

“He was in a bit of pain at quarter time, he’s obviously a really important player for us so that did hurt us on the field.

“He was one of the guys who led the playing group really well the last couple of years, so he really deserves to enjoy the reward for his efforts.”
