SOFTWARE company InterSystems continues to expand its program to promote IT career opportunities for Territorians, offering up to three paid internships in Sydney this summer to students at Charles Darwin University (CDU), among other initiatives.

The company’s investments in the Territory flow from the Northern Territory Government’s decision last year to invest in a major upgrade of the technology systems used across public hospitals and community health services.

InterSystems was selected to provide the software for the government’s Core Clinical Systems Renewal Program, designed to improve health outcomes for Territorians by promoting efficiency throughout the public healthcare system.

This major project has created new IT industry jobs in the Territory, with InterSystems opening a local office and rapidly expanding its Darwin team.

The company’s partner on the project, local firm Dialog Information Technology, has also hired additional staff.

As well as contributing to jobs growth, InterSystems sponsored and presented at CDU’s IT Code Fair last year to encourage students to pursue their dreams of a technology career, and is continuing its support this year.

“InterSystems’ ongoing support for the IT Code Fair is very much appreciated and benefits all the students who take part,” said Barbara White, Senior Lecturer in Information Technology at CDU.

InterSystems has also joined the Information Communication Technology Industry Association of the Northern Territory which aims, as one of its objectives, to attract, grow and retain ICT skills within the Territory.

The company is contributing to the community in other ways, for example through its major sponsorship of the Port Darwin Football Club.

“As well as helping to develop the technology industry in the Territory, we also look for opportunities for our people to become personally involved in the community,” said Luciano Brustia, Country Manager for InterSystems Australia.

According to Chris Hosking, Deputy Chief Executive from the Department of Corporate and Information Services (DCIS), InterSystems has exceeded expectations under its industry participation plan with the Northern Territory Government.

“I must compliment InterSystems on its commitment to the program,” said Mr Hosking.

“It has opened a local office, hired a team of people, and is subcontracting to local suppliers, all of which helps generate economic benefit for the Territory.”

InterSystems Australia’s 2018-19 Summer Internship Program will see up to three information technology or software engineering students from Charles Darwin University fly to Sydney for an eight week program designed to build the skills they need to kickstart their careers.

Augustine Thorbjornsen, one of two software engineering students who took up a paid internship last year, with airfares and accommodation included, described the opportunity as “a once in a lifetime experience.”
