Territorians will be invited to remember and reflect on the devastation of Cyclone Tracy, half a century after tore across Darwin.
The City of Darwin and Northern Territory Government will host a commemorative event on Saturday, November 30 at the Darwin Ski Club.
Mayor Kon Vatskalis said the free event was open to visitors and residents.
“It is open to the public and will also be livestreamed on the Cyclone Tracy website for those who are unable to attend in person,” Mr Vatskalis said.
“We will also have a range of services and displays available, including from the Red Cross and the Salvation Army.”
He said the day’s formalities would run from 9–10am (gates open at 8.30am), followed by a free morning tea at 10.15am.
Chief Minister Lia Finocchiaro said Cyclone Tracy would “always be a part of the Territory’s story”.
“A place forged by the fire of disaster, the resilience of Territorians is often linked to the determination of its people to rebuild,” she said.
Spots at the event are limited and can be secured by registering online.
The 50th anniversary commemoration event is one of at least ten Cyclone Tracy events occurring over the coming weeks and months, with others including author talks, museum exhibits and musical concerts.
