SOUTHERN Districts got an early finals boost yesterday when their classy defender Brodie Lake won the Round 18 nomination for the 2019-20 NT News Rising Star.
A 2019 under-16 All-Australian and a member of the Allies Academy (NT, Tasmania, Queensland and NSW-ACT), Lake’s consistency has made him a standout among his peers.
The 17-year-old’s run and carry out of the back line, combined with his clean ball use make him an integral part of the Crocodiles’ defence.
But he has also been effective as a wingman, where his leg speed and kicking to position have been important to the Districts cause.
Senior coach Shannon Rusca said his young charge thrived in one-on-one contests.
“Brodie is rarely beaten when he’s one out with an opponent it’s definitely his best asset, along with his run and carry off half back where he sets up a lot of forward moves,’’ Rusca told the NT News.
“His skills are very good, which adds to his fiercely competitive nature which is an edge that adds to his all round bag of tricks.’’
An NT Thunder representative at U16 and U18 level, Lake made the trek to Perth’s WAFL competition last year to ply his trade with Peel Thunder’s U18 side.
And while Lake was impressive in Districts’ big win over Waratah, his teammate Jaeden Watts continued his spectacular rise to league football with another four-quarter performance.
St Mary’s youth policy has produced two young guns in the past fortnight, with CJ Wilson and Riley Linklater among their side’s best players in the win over the Darwin Buffaloes.
This season’s Rising Star will be announced on Sunday, March 8 on the same night this season’s Nichols medallist will be revealed.
