A SIX-year-old girl who was tragically swept away from her family and drowned at a swimming spot in Kakadu National Park is understood to be a Nightcliff Primary School student.

The girl was swimming with family and friends at Motor Car Falls, 15km from the Kakadu Hwy and off the road to Gunlom Falls, late on Saturday afternoon.

The group was at the base of the falls when a fast-flowing current swept the girl away from her loved ones.

A statement released by NT Police late last night said the group immediately began searching for the little girl.

However, they were unable to find her.

Last night an NT Police spokesman said: “Multi-agency search resources were deployed to the 4WD-only access area.

“The girl’s body was located by the Territory Response Group earlier today (Sunday).”

According to Parks Australia, Motor Car Falls is surrounded by monsoon forest and requires a 7.5km return hike for visitors to access it.

The falls are known as a beautiful location and a hidden gem among the national park’s swimming holes.

In September last year a group of schoolchildren found the body of the man who drowned at Maguk Falls, Kakadu National Park.

Ryan Smith, 32, tragically passed away at the location, one of his favourite places to go camping.

A tourist estimated the man’s body was about 5m below the surface, in the main plunge pool up on the top gorge when he was discovered.

He said the students, who were understood to be on a school trip from Victoria, were distraught at the find with teachers having to calm them down.
