A group of Gold Coast concreters are laying the foundation for change by raising awareness of men’s mental health with a cheeky new calendar.

Combining hard hats with heart, the Sexy Concreters Calendar features staff from concreting firm Conseq in a variety of poses, from a wheelbarrow in hand to an iced coffee at smoko.

Conseq director Jesse Stenroos said the idea for the fundraiser, produced in conjunction with not-for-profit group LIVIN, stemmed from personal challenges.

“My mate is going through his own mental health struggles at the moment and it’s a massive issue around the world so we just wanted to bring some awareness to it,” he said.

“We all banded together – my wife actually brought the idea up.

“We wanted to bring some light to it and hopefully make some people smile.”

Machine operator Haydn Carter, also known as Mr August, said he was “far from photogenic” but was willing to pose for a good cause.

“Us being uncomfortable for five minutes goes a long way for the cause, so happy to do it,” he said.

“We’re just tradies, we’re not used to being in the spotlight.

“But it was a good laugh.”

Coming from a small country town and playing rugby for the Griffith Uni Knights, Mr Carter said it would be “interesting” to see his mates’ reactions, but it was also a reminder that strength and vulnerability could coexist.

“You always see it within football clubs,” he said.

“I’m used to being around big tough men and with tradies we’re up earlier and out late doing the big jobs, but it doesn't matter how big you are, (mental health) will bring the biggest guy down to their knees.”

The limited-edition calendars are being pitched as the perfect Christmas gift, with all proceeds going to LIVIN which works to break the stigma around men’s mental health.

“Mum will get a copy if she’s lucky,” Mr Carter joked.
