WITH one minor round remaining, Nightcliff warmed up for its tilt at back-to-
back NTFL flags with a hard worked 58-point win over Wanderers at Tigerland
yesterday.
Nightcliff owned the ball in the first quarter and had half-forwards Liam Holt-Fitz and Mathew Bricknell running riot.
But some resolute Wanderers defence, led by Thomas Motlop, Brenton Motlop and Braedon McLean ensured the Tiger dominance wasn’t fully reflected on the scoreboard.
Wanderers midfielder Shane Thorne lifted his work rate in the second term and constantly drove his team into attack, but strong Tiger defence held them
scoreless.
Playing his 100th NTFL game, Tiger ruckman Jono Miles dominated the big-man
contests in the third term and his side reaped the rewards with the opening four
goals.
Wanderers’ first major of the game came via Beau O’Connell when he banged
through at the 16-minute mark.
The lanky Miles played his 100th game across three NTFL clubs — St Mary’s,
Wanderers and Nightcliff — and after the game said he was happy with his time
at them all.
“Good times at all clubs and a premiership with Wanderers but now it’s
Nightcliff and I am happy here as well,” Miles said.
“We are on track this year (at Nightcliff) but don’t get too far ahead of
ourselves – all the talk was about Wanderers and to be truthful, I don’t know
who we play next week.”
A long goal from Michael Hagan early in the final quarter set the scene for
another Tiger victory.
