A Queensland woman on parole for the manslaughter of a mother and lighting the woman’s body on fire after keeping it in a cupboard for days in her home has been brought back before the courts.

Seven years after the violent death of Logan mother Sabrina Bremer, Rachel Angala Wheatley fronted Toowoomba Magistrates Court on Wednesday, January 15, for possessing two knives in public.

The now 35-year-old Toowoomba mother told the court despite the “stupid mistake” she was doing well on parole as she was working full-time and secured a private rental for her small family.

Wheatley pleaded guilty in Brisbane Supreme Court in 2019 to the manslaughter of Ms Bremer after her murder charge was downgraded.

She also pleaded guilty to interfering with a corpse and was sentenced to a 10 year, six month jail term, with the eligibility to apply for parole in March 2022.

Brisbane Supreme Court was told Ms Bremer died after a fight broke out between the women on August 16, 2016, over a heroin drug debt that Wheatley owed.

After keeping Ms Bremer’s body in a cupboard for two days, Wheatley and a co-offender drove it 100km away and dumped it on the side of a remote road about 30km southwest of Tweed Heads.

A local driving down a dirt road spotted what he thought was a burning log about 7am and called the police when he realised it was a body on fire.

When the woman pleaded guilty in January to entering the Toowoomba Courthouse with two flip knives in her handbag on December 17, 2024, she said she had been out of prison for about 20 months.

“I haven’t had a breach or an offence or a dirty drug rap or test or anything,” she said.

“While obviously it’s a concern given the nature of my historical charges I have spoken to parole about it and they said… I need to be well-behaved.”

She told the court that one of the blades she had confiscated from a family member who had been given the knife, and she thought the other knife was OK to carry because it was a small blade.

“I put it in my handbag and completely forgot about it and came to court because my partner was going to court and I handed my handbag over and (security) found it,” she said.

“It’s stupid. I don’t have an excuse. It was just me being absent-minded.”

Magistrate Mark Howden told Wheatley she needed to be extremely careful as she was still on parole and noted she seemed to be doing well.

“Up until I made a stupid decision to not look in my handbag before I came to court I was doing pretty well your honour,” she responded.

Mr Howden asked the self-represented woman “what do you submit I (sentence) you to?”

“Anything except send me back to jail,” she said.

She was convicted and fined $300 which was referred to the State Penalties Enforcement Registry.

Wheatley’s co-offender Joshua Mundy pleaded guilty to helping her cover up the killing as an accessory after the fact and interfering with the body.

Mundy was sentenced to a six-year and six-month jail term, however he was eligible to apply for parole at the time of his sentence in 2019 due to the time he already served in custody.
