A Toowoomba woman with a lengthy and violent criminal history has been released from prison after pleading guilty to her latest drug crimes.
Tammy Maree White fronted the Toowoomba Supreme Court on Tuesday, May 13, and pleaded guilty to 11 counts of supplying methamphetamine after spending 300 days in custody.
The 49-year-old grandmother also pleaded guilty to possessing a phone used to facilitate drug deals and possessing drug paraphernalia.
Before she was sentenced, White wiped tears of happiness from her eyes after seeing her six-month-old granddaughter for the first time from the dock.
The court heard White was charged with supplying meth following a raid at her Toowoomba home in July 2024.
However, police had only found a bong, scales, and clip seal bags, and the court heard it was her co-operation with police that led to the more serious charges after she volunteered her phone.
Although charged with 11 supply charges, there was only evidence of two street-level drug deals occurring.
The other charges related to offers to supply meth, the amounts ranging between a point and half an eight-ball.
The court heard that when the offending occurred, white was on a two year parole for two stolen car offences, drug possession, and a break and enter charged, which was imposed in January 2024.
However before that offending, the court heard White was on parole for the deprivation of liberty and torture of a Brisbane woman who she was assaulted and terrorised over a $1200 drug debt.
The victim, who managed to break free of her restraints and flag down a car after asking for a glass of water, was beaten, stripped, tied up, gagged, doused in hair dye, and put in a bathtub where White threatened to drown her.
White, who was high on meth during the offence, also tied an electrical cord around the woman’s neck.
The violent offence accused at Seventeen Mile Rocks in 2018, and in 2019 she was sentenced to a four year jail term with parole eligibility in March 2020.
Justice Catherine Muir told White her recent offending was serious, but noted it should be viewed in the context of her debilitating drug addiction, which was intrinsically linked to her “devastating” childhood.
Justice Muir noted that while in custody, White underwent every program available to her, sought mental health support, and organised support processes in the community so she could continue her rehabilitation as soon as she was released.
Justice Muir told White her grandchildren would be looking to her for guidance, and she had a lot to look forward to, however she needed to ensure she stayed connected with all of her support networks.
She was sentenced to a 12-month jail term, and the 300 days spent in custody were taken into account, with immediate release on parole.
“It is really important that you comply with (parole)… because if you don’t, you will go to jail … and you miss seeing your grandchildren grow up… and you will have put yourself there,” Justice Muir warned.
White will be subject to parole supervision for a year.
