Flames have ravaged a home in Bargara

Residents in a quiet coastal community east of Bundaberg have described the “dramatic” moment a fire ravaged a single-storey property overnight.

One woman said on Saturday she was watching television with her partner on Friday night when they heard a loud explosion moments before a fire erupted at her neighbours' home on Hawkins Dr, Bargara.

She said she ran outside and saw “flames flying” out the back of the home.

“The flames were billowing out the top of the roof,” she said.

As of Saturday morning, police tape remained in place and the inside of the home appeared completely gutted by the fire.

A Queensland Fire Department spokesman said the blaze began in a bedroom and quickly spread throughout the rest of the house causing significant damage.

Four fire and rescue crews arrived at the scene about 10.10pm Friday.

All people in the house were accounted for but a man in his 50s was soon taken to Bundaberg Hospital suffering from smoke inhalation.

The fire was under control just before 11pm not before it tore through the ceiling.

“Fire crews had the fire completely out by half past 12,” he said.

The cause of the blaze is unknown, and a Fire Investigation Unit is on scene however, police are not treating it as suspicious.
