The Southern Downs community has rallied behind an ambitious 18-year-old who was seriously injured in a horror crash in June.
Cody Iverson, 18, was injured in a horror crash in the Queensland border town of Killarney, sparking the community to embrace and support the man and his family.
Police have confirmed the young man, identified as Mr Iverson from Killarney, was taken to Warwick Hospital with life-threatening head injuries on June 21, before being flown to the Princess Alexandra Hospital.
A fundraiser set up for the family has raised more than $20,000 since its creation in mid-July.
The family of Mr Iverson describe the young man as a “fun loving, outgoing and caring son, nephew and friend who needs support in his recovery”.
“Cody continues fighting his best fight, and although he has made great improvements, he continues to be in a comatose state. While his long-term prognosis won’t be assessed until he wakes, we are all aware of the likelihood of ongoing rehabilitation being needed,” the family wrote.
“We are taking this one step at a time, but we can make a big difference for Cody if we all pull together.”
This month the family will also be hosting a bowls day at Tannymorel Bowls Club, north of Killarney, featuring social bowls, live music, raffles, auctions and a barbecue to raise money for the man.
Liz Ellis, volunteer at Tannymorel Bowls Club, said helping each other out just what people in the country do.
“Cody’s mum does some work at the club and the whole community has known him since he was little. It has certainly affected the whole community,” Ms Ellis said.
“The day is going to be huge, we have bowls, our raffles and we’re auctioning more than 40 items like signed Broncos and Cowboys jerseys.
“Him, and his mum, would be the first ones to help anyone in need, everyone in the community just wants to give back.
“Our community is filled with good-hearted people it’s nice we can give them a hand.”
You can support Cody and his family via their fundraiser here.
A Day for Cody will be on August 17 at Tannymorel Bowls Club from 12pm.
