Red Center to host multimillion-dollar film and Kate Woods
An acclaimed Australian director is set to bring the Red Centre to audiences around the world in a Territory-inspired film

The Red Centre will host a multimillion-dollar major film production expected to create 150 local jobs.
The Kangaroo Sanctuary in Alice Springs was announced as the setting for upcoming family comedy, Kangaroo, which will be directed by acclaimed Australian Kate Woods, best known for Lincoln Lawyer and Messiah.
The film follows the story of an ex-TV personality who becomes stranded in the outback town, where he teams up with an 11-year-old girl to work together to rescue and rehabilitate orphaned joeys.
The story is inspired by Chris Barnes, who was the founder of the Kangaroo Sanctuary.
Ms Woods said she was excited to film in the Territory.
“I am thrilled to be back in Australia working with STUDIOCANAL and such prestigious producers as Bunya and Brindle to bring this story of literally the symbol of Australia to life,” he said.
“I am so excited by the cast and crew who are coming on board, and to be filming in such a beautiful and iconic part of our country as the Northern Territory.”
The Territory Government confirmed it had invested $1.2 million toward the production and expected 100 local businesses to be used during the course of filming.
Minister for Industry Nicole Manison said the film would “showcase” Alice Springs.
“The Territory’s Screen Industry continues to grow which is driving economic growth and jobs across the Territory,” she said.
“This new multimillion-dollar production will see exciting Territorian emerging director Samantha Laughton working alongside acclaimed Australian Director, Kate Woods (in) a project which will showcase Alice Springs in all its beauty to the world.”
Pre-production work is expected to start next year with filming to commence in April 2024.
