IN a polished display that included a raging final quarter, Waratah put its last two losses behind them and overcame Palmerston by 53 points at Marrara yesterday – 18.12 (120) to 10.7 (67).
Waratah opened full of run and had two goals on the board through Henry
Kerinaiua and Bailey Zobel in the blink of an eye.
Palmerston shook off their early lethargy and peppered away but couldn’t register a six-pointer. A ruck battle between Magpie Jack Berry and his opponent, the recently returned
Alexander “Lanky Yanky” Aurrichio, was evenly contested.
But a couple of late goals to Tahs small forward Brodie Carroll gave the red-and-white team a
strong lead at the first break.
Palmy opened the second term with desperate intensity but scrambling Waratah defence held them out until the weight of possession and a warranted 50m penalty ensured Berry goaled for the black-and-whites.
Waratah champ Justin Beugelaar, playing up forward, got his side back on the board halfway through the quarter and when Kim Kantilla followed up a minute later, Tahs looked in control.
Three goals in the third term to Magpie forward Ezekiel Frank, two to Dane Nichols and singles to Djamangi Gaykamangu and Wade Shadforth got the Pies to within two goals of Tahs at the last break.
But a game-breaker snap by Waratah forward William Gorman and a mark and goal by
fellow forward Liam O’Connor were the catalysts for a red-and-white final term
goal rush.
Waratah swing man Beugelaar booted three goals in the win but he told the Sunday Territorian it should have been more.
“I missed some easy ones today and that shows that at heart I am a defender,” he grinned.
“That third quarter was a disappointment to the players and coaching staff, so
to come home the way we did shows character.
“We know that when we play good footy, we can run over any side and that was on display today.”
