Police have issued warrants for two ‘young boys’ over the violent stabbing of two cousins in Surfers Paradise at the weekend, as more details emerge about the incident.

Police have issued arrest warrants for two “young boys” over the violent stabbing of two cousins in Surfers Paradise at the weekend as more details emerged about the terrifying incident.

The 20-year-old Toowoomba cousins were attacked about 6.15am on Saturday as they were walking south along Surfers Paradise Boulevarde following a night out in Surfers.

Superintendent Peter Miles, of Gold Coast police, said the pair were “accosted” by a carload of people.

“As a result of that car pulling up next to them, two got out and ran after them with knives and then repeatedly stabbed them,” Supt Miles told ABC Gold Coast.

He said the wanted youths were aged 16 and 17.

He said police were investigating if the victims and their attackers were known to each other.

“We have got two young boys that are subject to arrest warrants,” he said.

“We haven’t located them yet but we know who they are.”

Supt Miles said the two victims, one of whom was in a serious condition in Gold Coast University Hospital after being stabbed in the chest, abdomen and back, were expected to be “OK”.

Witnesses reported hearing gunshots as the drama unfolded.

“There were people running – I heard someone say ‘get off the streets’,” one man who lives in a highrise opposite the stabbing scene said.

“I heard a banging noise that sounded not quite as loud as a gun, but it could have been a projectile.”

Police declared multiple crime scenes and taped off a bus stop where a bloodied ambulance blanket was still present hours after the attack.

Officers took one man into custody at the nearby Q1 supertower but later said the arrest was not related to the stabbings and the man was released without charge.

On Saturday afternoon, police released images of two men they said may be able to assist with their investigation into the incident.

“Gold Coast detectives are appealing to anyone who recognises the two people to come forward,” a police spokeswoman said.

“Police have spoken to multiple people at the scene; however no charges in relation to the wounding have been laid.

“Witnesses or anyone with relevant information are urged to contact police.”

Earlier, police said officers were attempting to locate the people involved.

“There is no threat to public safety at this time,” a spokeswoman said

“Police are appealing to anyone with information, including CCTV and dashcam vision, to please come forward.”
