Political upheaval at home and abroad, TayTay’s global dominance, Mike Tyson’s Netflix disaster and Donald Trump’s rise from the (almost) dead - 2024 was certainly a year of knockouts and fightbacks.
Who better to capture the controversy and chaos, triumphs and tragedies, than The Courier-Mail cartoonist Brett Lethbridge.
Across 2024, Lethbridge used his talents to capture exactly what was going on inside Queensland’s political scene as David Crisafulli stormed to victory, sending Steven Miles’ Labor Party into opposition for the first time in almost a decade.
Lethbridge’s caricatures of Mr Miles were instant classics, along with his commentary on Labor’s election spend and he youth crime issue that dominated much of the year.
The Brisbane Broncos’ disastrous season, which ended with the departure of coach Kevin Walters, and the Brittany Higgins “soap opera” both caught his attention.
Showcasing his exceptional talent for calling out the absurd, Lethbridge somehow managed to draw parallels between Raygun’s jaw-dropping Olympics performance and federal Opposition leader Peter Dutton’s calls to ban Palestinians from being granted visas.
There is plenty more of the Lethbridge magic to look forward to in 2025, with the federal election looming.
