The identity of two family members killed in a horror crash northwest of Brisbane on Sunday has been revealed as a third person continues to fight for life in hospital.

Woodford resident Adam Griggs’s mother Serena Griggs and brother-in-law Cameron Clark were killed and his sister Trudi Clark critically injured following the two-vehicle crash at Wamuran on Sunday afternoon.

It is understood the head-on crash occurred in a double-lined section of the D’Aguilar Highway about 3pm.

The male driver of the second vehicle was arrested at the scene on suspicion of dangerous driving.

However, a Queensland Police spokesman, on Wednesday morning confirmed investigations remained ongoing and the male driver was released without charge.

Mr Griggs said his family were visiting from interstate and travelling to the airport when the crash occurred.

“I had bought tickets for everyone to go to WICKED (the musical) for Mother’s Day … everyone had travelled from (interstate),” he said.

“We had a wonderful weekend …. my mother had met my (6-month old) grandson for the first time … my sister and her partner had just met my grandson as well.”

Mr Griggs said his mother was a social worker while his brother-in-law was a “well-known food critic and wine connoisseur” in Melbourne.

“(My mother) was a kind, caring, beautiful woman … they were both selfless people,” he said.

“My 11-year-old son is absolutely destroyed … my sister has lost her world, her rock.”

Mr Griggs said the car travelling behind his sister “narrowly” avoided the crash.

“(The two cars) collided and separated … he slipped between the (two cars),” he said.

Police allege the 26-year-old male driver of a Mitsubishi Pajero station wagon was travelling west on the D’Aguilar Highway when it crashed into a Ford Everest station wagon travelling in the opposite direction.

The passengers in the Everest, a 58-year-old man and a 68-year-old woman, died at the scene.

The 51-year-old female driver of the Ford Everest was flown to Sunshine Coast University Hospital with life-threatening injuries.

The Pajero driver suffered minor injuries and was taken to Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital for treatment, where police interviewed him.

Speaking at the scene of the fatal crash on Sunday, QPS Inspector Craig White said: “the driver of the westbound vehicle has been arrested for [allegations of] dangerous driving”.

Police urged witnesses or those with relevant footage to contact Policelink on 131 444 or Crime Stoppers 1800 333 000.

Mr Griggs said he had spoken to witnesses.

“I drive this road every day … I’m driving it every day so I can go and visit my sister in hospital,” he said.

Mr Griggs said that 20 years ago he was forced to bury three family members in a week following separate crashes.

“20 years ago my daughter was killed in a car (crash) … the driver was doing 180km/h in an 80km/h zone,” Mr Griggs said.

“At her wake I was told my father and his partner were dead from a (motorbike) accident.
